A coffee and cake crawl through Vienna

Six independent Vienna stops from the historic first district out to Mariahilfer Strasse, each open about the roaster and the machine behind the bar.

This is a walkable coffee and cake crawl through Vienna, beginning in the historic first district and moving outward through the inner-city neighbourhoods to the 15th. Six independent stops, with the roaster and the machine listed at each one where known.

1. CaffèCouture

CaffèCouture is at Freyung 2 in the Palais Ferstel, one of the most historically layered addresses in the first district. Founded in 2010 by Georg Branny, it was among the earliest third-wave roasters in Vienna, roasting its own coffee in house and pulling espresso on a Synesso machine.

2. Kaffeefabrik

Head south to the 4th district to find Kaffeefabrik on Favoritenstrasse. Founded in 2011 by Tobias Radinger, it is another of Vienna's pioneering specialty roasteries, built around organic certification and direct-trade sourcing. Retail bags are available alongside the bar.

3. Alt Wien Kaffee

A short walk towards the Naschmarkt, Alt Wien Kaffee on Schleifmuhlgasse has been roasting in house since 2000, making it one of the oldest specialty roasters in the city. The tasting bar lets you try before you buy, and the menu runs to more than 40 varieties.

4. Jonas Reindl Coffee Roasters

Take the tram north into the 7th district for Jonas Reindl on Westbahnstrasse. Owner Philip Feyer roasts in house and pulls espresso on a La Marzocco GB5. It is a focused, compact bar that takes its coffee seriously.

5. Kaffeemodul

A short walk north into the 8th district, Kaffeemodul on Josefstadter Strasse is claimed to be the smallest coffeehouse in Vienna: a single room with coffee and nothing else. The bar rotates between Nomi and Quijote, two well-regarded specialty roasters.

6. GOTA Coffee Experts

Finish by heading west to Mariahilfer Strasse in the 15th district. GOTA Coffee Experts, run by Katharina and Junior, roasts and bakes entirely in house. Ranked the top specialty coffee bar in Europe and third in the world in 2025, it is a remarkable end to the crawl for a family-owned operation on a commercial high street.

All six are independent owner-operated businesses. The route runs from the historic inner city outward through the craftsman districts of the 4th and 7th into the quieter 8th, finishing west along one of Vienna's main shopping streets. A day tram pass will carry you between the stops comfortably.

Common questions

Which Vienna cafes roast their own coffee?

Several on this crawl roast in house: CaffèCouture at Freyung, Kaffeefabrik in Wieden, Alt Wien Kaffee near the Naschmarkt, Jonas Reindl in Neubau, and GOTA Coffee Experts on Mariahilfer Strasse.

Which is the best specialty coffee bar in Vienna?

GOTA Coffee Experts on Mariahilfer Strasse was ranked the top specialty coffee bar in Europe and third in the world in 2025, which is an extraordinary distinction for a family-run independent. It roasts and bakes entirely in house.

Is there cake on the Vienna coffee crawl?

Yes. GOTA bakes its own pastries in house. Vogel Kaffee in the 2nd district, not on the main route, makes its own cheesecake and is worth adding if cake is the priority. Joseph Brot in the 3rd district is an artisan sourdough bakery that also serves specialty coffee.

Is the Vienna coffee crawl walkable?

The first three stops in the 1st and 4th districts are walkable from each other. Stops four and five in the 7th and 8th require a short tram or U-Bahn ride, and the final stop on Mariahilfer Strasse is a further tram west. A day travel pass makes the crawl comfortable.
